Happy Endings

Its a tough world out there for pit bulls today.  They are abused by some, misunderstood by many and generally not given the chance they deserve to prove what great dogs they can be.  Here we get to show off the dogs that have beat the odds and made it to a great home with loving new owners who shower them with toys, treats and most importantly love.  Help us add some more of our stellar dogs to the list.....

Sweet Daisy

Summertime is a tough time for outdoor dogs.  This couldn’t be truer in Daisy’s case.  When Humane Agent Christie Kang found Daisy, the chain she was attached to was hopelessly tangled barley giving her room to move her head let alone eat, drink or escape the broiling sun!  Arriving at the shelter in late summer of 2008, Daisy quickly cast a spell on everyone around her and she was soon the shelter favorite.  Staff and volunteers alike couldn’t pass her kennel door without sweetly telling her how cute she was or helping add to her now full waistline with treats.  She ate it all up—and even smiled to show her delight!
After a short stint in foster care, Daisy charmed Allie and her boyfriend Tony.  Daisy joined the household of two humans as well as the resident pets (a 13 year-old cat, a chinchilla and a few fish).  It took some time for Sheila the cat to get used to the newest silly canine addition, but in time everyone adjusted.  Daisy is now a well-loved family member and has sprinkled her magic on Allie’s mom.  Daisy’s “grandma” makes sure that when Allie comes to visit her favorite grand-dog is coming as well!  Keep smiling, Daisy!

Fraggle

Fraggle and his sister Strawberry were rescued from an abusive owner by Capital Area Humane Agents in 2008. After the trial against his owner had concluded, Fraggle made his way to a loving foster home where he developed an affinity for lounging on cushy chairs and some knarly tether ball skills (click here to see fraggle in action on the tether ball court). After a few months in foster care, Fraggle caught the eye of a young couple and their 2 children. But the big question was - would the ladies of the house (2 adopted Shih Tzus Casey and Lucy) welcome our buddy Fraggle in to the family - or show him the door......

Happily the ladies welcomed him with open paws and Fraggle moved into his forever home just in time for the holidays. Long neighborhood walks and frequent games of fetch with his favorite light up balls occupy Fraggles days now - its good to be the king!

Princess
Princess was a wee pup when she came to CAHS in January of 2008.  Humane Agents found a helpless 3-month old Princess living with a convicted animal abuser whose probation strictly prohibited living with companion animal for 5 years.  Fast forward to a few months later, Princess entered foster care and didn’t have to go back to her unsafe “home.”  She attended adoption events and wagged her entire body to greet new friends, but like so many of our Bully adoptables, a furever home takes time to find.  Close to 12 months after being rescued as a baby, a nearly full grown Princess catches the eye of a young couple.  Sunny and Jeremy shared their home with a 7-year old pit bull named Butkus and felt that it was the right time to add to their brood.  Princess now has a beautiful, large fenced in back yard to revel in, Butkus has a built-in playmate to keep him young, and Sunny & Jeremy now have two furry children to share their home with.  Her Highness has left the shelter!

Dora

Dora found her way to CAHS in late 2007 when Humane Agents picked her up as an abandoned dog.  Dora’s full story was later learned.  Sadly, Dora had not been intentionally abandoned, but orphaned after her owner lost their life in a car accident.  Our sweet and snuggly Dora patiently waited for her perfect home until the summer of 2008.  The wait was certainly worthwhile!  Evie, Jerry and their 3.5 year old daughter, Madison, had lost their beloved female pit bull of 6 years to medical complications and the remaining dog was lonely.  Dora’s photo on the CAHS site grabbed the family’s attention right away as she was almost a mirror image of their beloved Willow, whom they had to let go a few short month before.  Dora and her family celebrated their one-year anniversary together just a few months ago.  Her family tells us that Dora’s favorite thing to do is to curl up on the couch with the family.  Welcome home Dora!

Diamond and Debo have the distinction of being the first Bully Breed Program members ever at CAHS .  Rescued from life outdoors and tethered to a fence, they found safety at the shelter in May of 2005.  Diamond and Debo are both unique dogs in their own right and will forever hold a special place for those who know them best.

Diamond

After enduring a life in the elements, Diamond and his yard-mates were brought to CAHS.  As we began to work with him, we realized Diamond required some special handling.  When Diamond was leashed up and brought outside, he simply sat in the grass and quivered.  It’s hard to see a dog in such pain, especially when the pain is sheer fear about the unknown.  Will this human be nice to me?  What will happen when I leave the safety of my kennel today?  But soon he trusted his new people and after a short time, he wanted nothing but to be with them.  Lucky for him, his new home was right in front of him.  Well, actually, at the other end of the leash.  Three plus years later in his first real home, Diamond is a happy dog.  We’d like to say he’s a spoiled pooch who generally gets what he wants.  Diamond politely shares his Mommy with two other dogs.  A Diamond truly is a girl’s best friend!

Debo

What can you say about a dog like Debo?  This snorty, bow-legged creature was from the same less than perfect situation that Diamond came from.  But he was happy!!!  Man was this dog happy when we first met him.  The happy dance he did when he met his new volunteer buddies was so jubilant that the poor dude sprung a leak!  As it turns out, Debo was nearly 100% deaf in both ears.  This sure didn’t slow him down one bit though.  He rolled in the mud like a piggy, went on special trips with special friends (like his canoe ride with Rick), attended obedience class (and graduated!) and kept us busy trying to come up with ways to amuse him before his perfect home was found.  Debo’s perfect home was definitely found—and then some.  Now dubbed “Fluffy” due to his total lack of being even a bit fluffy, our snorty pig-dog has a Mom, a Dad and various 4-legged siblings.  As an added bonus, Fluffy gets to live the good life as a country bumpkin away from the hustle and bustle of city life.  His closest furry friend is a stray-turned-diva Chihuahua mix named Cayenne and their unexpected friendship is a joy to behold.  Fluffy won big and got the girl!
